Founded on March 31, 1888, in Turin by five historic rowing clubs – RSC Cerea (1863), C. Eridano (1864), SC Armida (1869), SC Caprera (1883) and SC Esperia (1886) – the Italian Rowing Federation operates with the aim of promoting and developing the discipline both in Italy and internationally. Its activities are focused on improving competitive performance, enhancing the image of rowing, and safeguarding its historical, cultural, social, and economic values, with the objective of increasing its appeal to both the sports community and the business sector.
Particular emphasis is placed on the principles of social responsibility: through its widespread network of rowing clubs, rowing fosters inclusion by engaging people of all ages and abilities.
Since the early 2000s, the Federation has also developed the coastal rowing sector. In 2005, the first international regatta was held in Noli (Savona); subsequently, Sanremo hosted the first three Italian Championships as well as the 2008 World Championships, followed by their return to Italy in 2011 in Bari.
From the evolution of Coastal Rowing, the Beach Sprint discipline was born, officially presented at the Mediterranean Games in Pescara in 2015. In less than a decade, thanks also to major international events held in Italy – including the 2020 European Rowing Coastal Challenge in Castagneto Carducci and the World Championships in Barletta 2023 and Genoa 2025 – Beach Sprint has gained recognition as an Olympic discipline, with its debut scheduled for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
